University, Williamstown and Braxton County take home girls cross country championships

University, Williamstown, and Braxton County earned team titles at the 2024 WVSSAC Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning on the campus of Cabell Midland in Ona, W.Va.

AAA Girls Recap:
Scoring runners for University included Abigail Rogers (2nd), Rosalina Biundo (14th), Claire von Boetticher (17th), Caroline Ballard (18th), and Izzy West (23rd) combining to take the title after a string of runner-up finishes at the championships. Cabell Midland had its five runners finish in the top 31 to take second with 74 points, followed by Morgantown in third with 83, Preston in fourth with 100, and Parkersburg rounding out the top five with 143 points.

Individually, Samantha Shreve from Buckhannon-Upshur took the AAA girls’ individual title with a time of 18:27.83. Rogers was second, followed by Savannah Pritt from Cabell Midland. Jefferson’s Hannah Phillips was fourth, Parkerburg’s Morgan Metz took fifth, and Wheeling Park freshman Brenna Tipton was sixth.

AA Girls Recap
Williamstown captured the AA girls’ team title with a score of 36 points. The Yellow Jackets were led by Alyssa Sauro (2nd), Cassie Sites (5th), Ava Lightfritz (9th), Alexis Wynn (12th), and Sylvia Harris (18th), delivering a strong team performance. Frankfort finished second with 95 points, followed by Elkins in third with 100, Nicholas County in fourth with 140, and East Fairmont rounding out the top five with 149 points.

Individually, Maysen Fletcher of Herbert Hoover took the AA girls’ individual title with a time of 18:17.77. After running stride-for-stride with Saura for the majority of the race, Fletcher made a late push and held off Sauro in the final 100 meters to take the win. Emilia Tenney from Elkins finished third in 18:55.02. Addison Tharp from Frankfort and Cassie Sites from Williamstown rounded out the top five in a competitive field.

A Girls Recap
Braxton County, winners in AA a season ago, captured the A girls’ team title with a score of 45 points. Braxton County had six runners in the top 20 led by Laura Cain (2nd), Allison Lloyd (10th) Leah Payne (12th), Bethany Payne (13th), Tegan Huff (17th), and Reece Carpenter (18th). St. Marys took second with 61 points, followed by Doddridge County in third with 78, Charleston Catholic in fourth with 88, and Ravenswood rounding out the top five with 98 points.

Individually, Arabella Boggs from Charleston Catholic took the A girls’ individual title with a time of 19:03.82, over a minute faster than runner-up Cain (20:13.40). Bailey Holden from Doddridge County close behind in third at 20:13.97. Bentlee Williams of Ritchie and Anna Bennett of St. Marys rounded out the top five.
