WVSSAC Hosts Third Annual Leadership Summit Sponsored by Chick-fil-A

The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) held its third annual Leadership Summit this week, aimed at fostering leadership skills among student-athletes and coaches across the state. Sponsored by Chick-fil-A, the two-day event was hosted in Charleston and Morgantown, with over 325 students representing more than 60 schools participating.

A key component of the summit is Chick-fil-A’s involvement in developing a tailored leadership program for West Virginia’s students and coaches. This partnership, which began three years ago, highlights Chick-fil-A’s commitment to youth leadership development, as demonstrated by their long-term involvement in WVSSAC events, including sponsorships of the WV Boys & Girls Basketball Tournament and the WV State Cross Country Meet.

This year’s summit featured two distinguished speakers from Chick-fil-A: Shane Benson, Vice President for Field Operations, and Jeff Henderson, Director of Leadership Innovation and Strategy.

Benson leads a team that oversees operations across six regions, including the Atlantic, Midwest, and Southeast. He plays a pivotal role in ensuring operational excellence while working closely with Chick-fil-A operators and team members, bringing their perspectives to strategic decision-making. Benson’s extensive experience in managing field operations has made him a key figure in Chick-fil-A’s growth and success.

Henderson, recognized as one of Forbes Magazine’s “20 Speakers You Shouldn’t Miss,” is a thought leader in leadership innovation. He is the author of the best-selling book Know What You’re FOR, which has become a guiding resource for businesses and non-profits alike. In his role at Chick-fil-A, Henderson helps shape leadership strategies that empower teams to thrive in times of uncertainty. His experience also extends to working with organizations such as the Atlanta Braves and North Point Ministries, where he developed leadership programs that emphasize both purpose and profit.

George Angelos, owner-operator of Chick-fil-A in Vienna/Parkersburg and cross country coach at Parkersburg High School, has been instrumental in initiating and growing the Leadership Summit.

“I love to win and compete, but we all know that sports is about more than just winning and losing,” Angelos said. “I am very passionate about being involved in the lives of young people, and the Leadership Summit is a great opportunity to have an impact across West Virginia. We are extremely fortunate to be able to leverage the incredible resources Chick-fil-A provides as a worldwide leader in leadership development, and I am very proud that we can help shape these young leaders and make a real difference.”
