How to Become an Official

Individuals interested in becoming an official with the WVSSAC must complete a RefReps Officiating Education Course or a Local Board Training course.

You must be at least 16 years of age or older to register for a training class. Those under the age of 18 can only officiate middle school contests with a veteran official.

RefReps– Is an online education system where you will complete the course training. The remainder of the training is in-person with the local board. Officials must submit their certificate of completion to their training instructor, prior to the end of the local board training class, to be eligible to obtain a WVSSAC officiating license. There is an up-front cost to take the online course, but the WVSSAC will waive the registration fee for your first year.

Local Board Training– Is a 30-hour in-person class that consists of 20-hours of classroom work and 10-hours of practicum. Once the class has ended, you will be sent a link to register and pay the required fees. Registration fee is not waived for this option. Contact the WVSSAC for the contact information to the Local Board in your area.

All officials are required to pay a $17 AOA Insurance Fee and $10 *Background Check Fee (*not applicable if you are under the age of 18) in addition to the registration fee.

Registration fees are $37.50 for all sports. Swim and Track are $30.00.
